My Running Journey: A Transformation of Body, Mind, and Life

Since August 2019, I took my first steps into the world of running, unaware of how profoundly it would reshape my life. Today, as I reflect on this journey, I am filled with gratitude and pride for the transformation it has brought to my body, mind, and overall positivity.

The Beginning

Like many, I started running with a simple goal—to become healthier. I weighed 74 kg and struggled with maintaining a consistent fitness routine. The initial days were tough, every kilometer felt challenging, and every run tested my willpower. But with persistence, running became more than just a workout; it became a way of life.

Physical Transformation

Running brought significant physical changes. Over time, I shed excess weight, going from 74 kg to a lean 62 kg. But it wasn’t just about losing weight. Running helped me build strength, endurance, and agility. My biometric parameters improved, reflecting not just weight loss but also a reversal in biological age markers. I felt younger, healthier, and more energetic.

Mental and Emotional Growth

The benefits of running extended beyond physical health. It became a mental sanctuary—a space where I could clear my thoughts, process emotions, and cultivate resilience. The discipline of training instilled patience and focus, while the victories, big and small, boosted my confidence. Running taught me the value of consistency and the power of setting and achieving goals.

Lifestyle Changes

Running reshaped my entire lifestyle. My daily routine became more structured, and my eating habits evolved to support my training. I learned to prioritize rest and recovery, to listen to my body, and to maintain a balanced approach to health. The mindset shift was profound; challenges in life began to feel like hills on a running route—tough but conquerable.

Runner's common Injuries:

However, the journey was not without setbacks. In October 2022, just before the TMM 2023, I experienced shin pain. It affected my training for one and a half months, but after gradual recovery, I came back stronger and achieved my first sub-4 marathon at TMM 2023. In April 2024, I faced runner's knee (ITB syndrome). These injuries were frustrating, but I learned the importance of rest, self-care, and gradual recovery. Taking care of my body helped me bounce back stronger and more determined to continue running.

These common injuries happen to almost every runner at some point. The key is to listen to your body, take proper care, and allow enough rest for recovery. With patience and the right approach, you can always return stronger and more resilient to the road.

Participating in Events and Striving for Personal Bests

Joining running events became a cornerstone of my journey. Each race presented an opportunity to test my progress and set new benchmarks. The thrill of the start line, the energy of fellow runners, and the joy of crossing the finish line fueled my passion. Striving for personal bests became a motivating force, pushing me to refine my training and break previous limits progressively.

Enhancing Running Parameters

As I advanced, I focused on improving key running parameters that contributed to overall performance:

• Heart Rate (HR): By monitoring and optimizing my heart rate zones, I enhanced my aerobic capacity and endurance. My heart rate mostly stays in the green zone during practice, ensuring efficient fat burning, and moves into zone 4 during events for peak performance.

• Stride Length: I improved my stride efficiency, maintaining a stride length of over one meter for optimal propulsion.

• Cadence Per Minute: I consistently achieved a cadence of over 180 steps per minute, reducing the risk of injury and ensuring efficient forward motion.

• VO2 Max: Targeted interval training helped increase my VO2 max to 55, enhancing my ability to sustain higher intensities.

• Running Form: Focused drills refined my posture, arm swing, and foot strike, contributing to smoother and faster runs.

• Strength Training: Incorporating strength workouts improved muscle endurance and overall power.

Achievements That Inspire:

Looking back at my progress, I feel a deep sense of accomplishment:

• Half Marathon (HM) Timing: From my first HM at 2:18, I steadily improved to 1:36. This leap wasn’t just about speed but about understanding my body, refining my technique, and pushing my limits.

• Full Marathon (FM) Timing: My first FM took 4:43, but with dedicated training, I brought it down to 3:32. Every run, every setback, and every early morning was worth it for this progress.

Target-Oriented Running for Continuous Growth:

Each year, I set specific targets to push my boundaries and improve both timing and overall health. These goals keep me focused and motivated, driving me to:

• Identify and work on key performance metrics.

• Plan training cycles that challenge and enhance my abilities.

• Incorporate new techniques and strategies for continual improvement.

• Monitor health markers and ensure a balanced approach to physical and mental wellness.

• Embrace every milestone, knowing it contributes to long-term progress.

The Journey Ahead:

Running has not just changed me; it has become a part of me. The road ahead is filled with new goals—breaking personal records, exploring new terrains, and inspiring others along the way. More than timings or medals, it's about embracing the journey, one stride at a time.

In running, I found strength, balance, and joy. And as I continue this journey, I know the best is yet to come.
